Dolphin Coin Series
The Mint is delighted to
announce the release of a stunning coin in a new series of proof-like
coins from the British Virgin Islands featuring one of the world’s best
loved aquatic mammals, the Dolphin.
The grace and beauty of the
form and movement of the dolphin amazes us, their playful, curious nature
charms us and their built-in grin amuses us. Found in virtually all seas
and oceans of the world, there are over 50 species of Dolphin and much
research is still being undertaken to find out about these amazing
creatures. The clicking sounds made by these endearing animals is a form
of sonar. Echoes from surrounding objects allow them to detect obstacles,
other animals and matter in the water as their eyesight is not very good.
Dolphins need to be conscious in order to breathe, which means that they
do not go into a deep sleep and studies have shown that they have the
ability to let one half of their brain ‘sleep’ at a time.
This wonderful creature is
also used as motivation in rehabilitation programmes and swimming with
Dolphins is seen as being very therapeutic and helps with learning
difficulties and motivates disabled individuals.
The design on the coin
features a single Dolphin swimming in an underwater setting. The obverse
of the coin carries of fine effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by
Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS FSNAD. The 24 carat gold versions of these stunning
new coins will be produced in a proof-like finish. The fine 999 Silver
coins will be produced as proof coins with each coin struck four times to
produce finely sculpted frosted details contrasting with mirror brilliant
background. A cupro nickel version will also be available.

The playfulness and inquisitive
nature of the Dolphin has captured our hearts and their resourcefulness
never ceases to astound. Their friendly manner has encouraged us to swim
with these amazing mammals, an activity which is believed to be very
therapeutic. To honor the World’s best loved aquatic mammal the Government
of the British Virgin Islands has issued a spectacular coin depicting a
mother and baby dolphin swimming in an underwater setting with coral and air
bubbles. This exceptional new coin is available in pure gold proof-like
finish, Proof silver and uncirculated Cupro Nickel, and would be an
outstanding addition for any numismatist’s collection and a superb gift for
all dolphin enthusiasts.
