Royal Australian Mint
2002 Queen Mother $5 Proof Coin

In early April the Mint
announced that it would release a coin to celebrate the life of Her
Majesty Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother.
The Mint commissioned the reverse design
from Stuart Devlin, the designer of Australia's first circulating decimal
currency coins as well as the Mint's Royal Ladies set of 1992. At the time
of producing the designs for the Royal Ladies Set, Stuart Devlin had a
special audience with the Queen Mother.
The design is based on a photograph taken
of the Queen Mother in 1927 during her first visit to Australia as the
Duchess of York. This was a particularly important visit, including as it
did the formal opening by the Duke of York, later to become King George
VI, of Australia's Parliament House in Canberra on 12 May 1927.
Mintage of only 30,000 worldwide!
